Many people feel fatigued after a long day of work. It is very understandable. Grueling commutes, stressful deadlines, office politics, and staying late takes a toll on your body you may not expect. If you are in your 50s or later, you may have noticed this tiredness and aches with increasing intensity.

There are two major problems with work fatigue after 50. First, your tiredness takes a serious toll on your quality of life. If you return home from work fatigued, then you are probably missing out on family activities. Furthermore, you are probably staying sedentary for the rest of the evening. Missing out of this important time may make you feel depressed. You may try to comfort yourself with unhealthy foods and other substances but these will actually increase the fatigue.

There are also major health concerns associated with this kind of fatigue. If it causes you to become sedentary then you are very likely to gain a lot of weight. This weight unnecessarily strains your cardiovascular and endocrine systems as well as your joints. This increases your likelihood of age-related illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, or cancer. If you already have a health concern, you are putting your health at a greater risk. Ongoing fatigue is also associated with the onset of serious health problems. Fortunately, many of these issues can be relieved or reversed through fitness over 50.

No matter how old you are, fitness can greatly influence your health, happiness, and energy. Fit people are able to counteract the effects of a stressful work environment. They find that fitness has given them a positive outlook which helps them maintain motivation and actually perform better. This motivation carries over to their off work time. They are able to thoroughly engage in recreation with their friends and family instead of spending an evening slumped on the couch.

Exercise itself increases adrenalin and blood flow which gives you a burst of energy that can last for hours. Therefore, many people who suffer from after work fatigue over 50 exercise early in the morning. This gives them the energy increase to carry them throughout the rest of the day. Furthermore, they often feel they get a “second wind” at the end of the day and are able to fully engage in activities with their family and friends.

There is more to fitness over 50 than just exercise. Good nutrition is a vital part of maintaining energy levels. Fats make your body feel lethargic and gain weight. Sugary foods can give you a quick burst of energy that is followed by a steep and severe crash. However, foods that are high protein, lean, non-sugary, and non-starchy can give you continued energy and support your over 50 exercise program.

You may need to make lifestyle changes to support your fitness over 50 goals and increase your energy. You may drink a glass of wine or beer after work, but these only provide temporary comfort. They slow down your metabolism and decrease your energy. You should also address any issues at work, like office politics, that are giving you unnecessary stress and avoid them. You should also try to make a habit of a regular physical activity you can enjoy with friends or family after work. If you always enjoy a Wednesday night tennis game with friends you will stay motivated all day long in anticipation.

People who are fit over 50 have better energy levels. They also have fewer sick days and age-related aches. The best thing you can do is to get off the couch, exercise, eat right, and get rid of after work fatigue for good.
